At the time of this writing my girls are sitting laughing and giggling at the menu screen of The Lorax DVD. Yes, I said the menu screen. They have been doing this for a good ten minutes – just giggling and making sound effects at the silly antics of the movie’s characters. Who knew that a DVD intro could be so entertaining? Many thanks to The Lorax people for the DVD – my kids adore it!
I know that The Lorax has found himself in some unsavory predicaments over the last year. It seemed that success and money went to his head and he lost his way for a while, promoting everything from disposable diapers to pancakes and automobiles. Thankfully it seems that he has collected himself and is getting back to his Earth loving day and once again spreading the good word that “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
One of my kids favorite parts of the movie is a song squence called “How bad can I be?” which contains the following lyrics:
How bad can I be? I’m just building the economy.
How bad can I be? A portion of proceeds goes to charity.
All the customers are buying.
And the money’s multiplying.
And the PR people are lying.
And the lawyers are denying.
Who cares if a few trees are dying?
Every time I hear this song I am touched. I am sad to hear these words that echo what exists in our society, but I am also happy that people are beginning to really see it and that such a strong message is being sent even if in a cartoon. I remember hearing those words when we saw the film in the theater and thinking “So many people are going to hear this message.” It honest to goodness brought a tear to my eye. Messages like this are found throughout the film and make me happy to have my children calling it one of their favorite. It is even one that I have enjoyed sitting down to watch over again with the kids. They love for me to make some popcorn and snuggle up with them to watch The Lorax.
In addition to being a great film, the Blu-ray Combo Pack includes a digital download (love this!) and three extra short films featuring characters from the movie. They find themselves in various situations that provide lots of laughs and left my kids wanting more, which works great because I like to let them watch those before the film starts. The shorts, which include outtakes from the film are:
- Serenade – Two Bar-ba-loots : One love shy and the other suave and confident — battle for the heart of their would-be sweetheart with the help of a colorful cast of characters, including the Humming-Fish and Swomme-Swans.
- Wagon-Ho : Two Bar-ba-loots take The Once-ler’s wagon on a ride they won’t soon forget.
- Forces of Nature : Determined to scare The Once-ler out of Truffula Valley, The Lorax decides to create the illusion of ominous forces of nature.
If you don’t have the Blu-ray Combo Pack yet, be sure to add it to your list. It would make a great Christmas item too! If you have the DVD or have see the film, I would love to hear your thoughts on it!
