If you are on Facebook, and even if you aren’t, you have likely heard some of the uproar about pages getting slammed by massive restrictions that allow only about 10% of ‘likes’ to see their status updates on average – that is unless they pay, which is not cheap.
Since this is a “free” platform we are talking about, I don’t think that anyone finds it unreasonable for Facebook to make money but limiting the views on updates is not the the simple issue that it seems. Facebook advertising is nothing new – companies, organizations, causes, blogs and other pages have been advertising for some now now, paying Facebook to increase their visibility and expand their reach – getting new ‘likes’. Now Facebook wants to charge them again to reach those users, and that’s not all! You are being penalized too. You are missing out on updates from the pages that you chose to like and interact with – important events, great deals, useful tips, conversations, etc. Pages aren’t the only ones who are missing out on these relationships but there are things you can do – one of the easiest solutions for now is to create what is called an “Interest List”, it’s easy to do and once you have it set up adding new pages is a breeze!
Visit a page you’d like to add to your list – like mine for example – and then as you hover of the “Liked” button a menu will appear. If you don’t have a list click on “+ New List…“, otherwise simply add the page to the list of your choice. Personally I just have one main list that I use. I add all of the pages and friends that I would like to follow and I use it as my news feed. I actually have this set as my Facebook bookmark for ease.
Once you have your list created you’ll want to be able to easily access it. Go to the homepage and scroll down until you see “Interests” on the left hand side and you see your new list. When hovering over your new list an edit icon will appear – click on “Add to Favorites” – from there you can easily rearrange its position on your left sidebar as seen in “step 3″ below.
Now that you have your list set up you want an easy way to add friends, family and pages without having to visit every page. When on your list page you will see “Manage List” on the right side of the page. Hover and you will see a menu – click “Edit List” and you will be able to sort this list by friends, pages and subscriptions. From there you can easily click to add all of the people that you would like to see updates from and not have to miss important post because of random Facebook algorithms.
As I mentioned, I like to use one main list but the options here really are limitless. You can have lists for family, friends, special interest groups, deals, etc. The options are there to fit your needs and help you make the most of your time on Facebook!
Thanks for visiting – I love how much better I navigate Facebook now and I hope that this helps you too!
