Over the weekend I had the opportunity to spend some time at my in-laws who happen to have a nice little area of berries on their property – including several antioxidant bushes… I mean blueberry bushes! Their bushes happen to be doing amazing well this year, just loaded with huge berries. The kids and I had so much fun scouting for the perfectly ripe and plump berries.
I’ve only been strawberry picking once, and never for bush berries, though I have seen several pick-your-own farms in our area. It got me thinking about how fun, educational and good for the kids it really is. Really, it’s good for me too. It is a nice reminder of where all of our food really comes from and there is nothing quite like eating a fresh, plump organic berry right off of the bush and spending true quality time outdoors.
Though they weren’t ready, the kids were already scoping out the loaded blackberry bushes – and I started to dream of raspberries, my childhood favorite. This was such a fun treat for us since I don’t generally buy many berries from the store since where we live the organic ones can be hard to find. I am now looking forward to our next berry outing and I’m sure that the kids are too. My husband and I were even discussing how great it would be to grow our own (even though he doesn’t eat berries – weird, I know!).
If you’d like to go berry picking and find a farm in your area, I suggest entering the name of the berry you’d like to pick and your zip code in the search boxes at LocalHarvest.org to get you started.
Have you ever taken your family to a berry farm? What are your favorites to pick?
