What Young Living membership option is right for you? — Imagine using and sharing a product you adore. If you are interested in essential oils, we can help you decide what type of membership will work for you. Spoiler alert: There are no fees!I’ve been using essential oils for some time now and really love them to help lift the mood in my home. As a result, I made the decision to sign up with a company to help save on oils (and other products!). I am not a sales person (that’s not my thing), but I have been asked about oils, about Young Living, and about buying & selling their products. If you are interested in oils, I hope that this article helps with the “which option” sign up portion of joining Young Living.

The first thing you will likely ask yourself about signing up with Young Living is “How much will it cost me?” The answer is that it depends on what you want from your membership, but please remember that you are never under obligation to buy anything, no matter what any representative tells you or pressures you to believe. However, there are perks when you do and if you want the benefits, you must meet purchase requirements (again, these are not membership fees). Regardless of the method you use, the best way to purchase your oils is to sign up. You can’t get member-only discounts and freebies any other way!

There are two main membership types:

Customer & Independent Distributor (though this one can really be broken into two).

  • Customer (buy at retail pricing – no requirements, no fees)
  • Independent Distributor as Customer (buy at wholesale pricing – no fees, but there is a $50/year purchase requirement)
  • Independent Distributor as Business (buy at wholesale pricing – no fees, but there is a purchase requirement – read more bellow)

The second two are technically the same sign up method (distributor) but the difference is in how you use your account. Below, I will break down the basics and how-to of each type.

Customer

This type of membership is completely free to join though availability may differ by country.

  • No membership fees.
  • No yearly dues.
  • No obligation.
  • No selling.

What Young Living membership option is right for you? — Check out the new Young Living Premium Starter Kits! This type of membership allows you to easily order the oils and products that you need at retail pricing, plus tax & shipping–sort of like purchasing from your own private store. The products purchased here will cost 24% more than if you sign up as a distributor.

What Young Living membership option is right for you? Learn the differences and check out the new Young Living Premium Starter Kits. They are an exceptional value! This membership does not get you wholesale pricing.

You can sign up here.

Independent Distributor as Customer ( Save 24% with Wholesale Pricing)

This type of membership is signed up as “Member” or “Independent Distributor” and requires the purchase of a starter kit, which you can choose for yourself. They are great kits that range in price from $35 to $265. You only have to purchase a start up kit once, at sign up – and they are useful. Personally, I think that the Premium Starter Kit ($165) is a great value and idea, and not just because it’s at the top price tier. This kit comes with a diffuser (I love mine!) and includes eleven different bottles of oil to get you started, a roll-on attachment, 10 samples packets (to use or share!), 10 sample bottles (these are so handy), and materials to help you become familiar with oils and how to use them. If a diffuser isn’t something you’re interested in, or you already know what things you’d like to order, the Basic Starter Kit ($35) is a great way to get in, and then you can begin ordering the products you want at wholesale, right away.

  • Save 24% off of retail pricing.
  • No membership fees.
  • No yearly dues.
  • No obligation.
  • No selling required.

If you wish to keep wholesale pricing, the only requirement is that you purchase about $50 worth of products per year (50 PV) – which is crazy easy to do and essentially just keeps your account from becoming dormant. If you do not purchase 50 PV (their point system) worth of products in a year, you can still buy oils, it will just be at retail pricing until you meet their requirement.

You can find step-by-step help for the Young Living sign up process here.

If you’re interested in deeper savings, you can also sign up with Essential Rewards to save up to 44% off of retail. You must be signed up as a distributor to be able to enroll. More info here.

Independent Distributor as Business ( Save 24% with Wholesale Pricing )

This type of membership is with the intent of making an income. It is similar to the information above, with a few changes. If you love the products, chances are that you already share what you know with friends and family. By being a distributor, you can earn a commission when those people (and more!) buy oils from you, or sign up under you. Just like being a wholesale customer, you are required to purchase a starter kit, which range in price from $35 to $265 (depending on diffuser choice). You only have to purchase a start up kit once (same as above). If you wish to earn a commission check, you must also be enrolled in the “Essential Rewards” program. To be eligible for payment, your monthly Essential Rewards order should be at or over $100/month (100 PV)—which is surprisingly easy to do with their new product offerings. (My typical order consists of cleaning products, bath bombs, and other giftable items. They also have monthly specials that can earn you free exclusives.) (Note: There are now some commissions that you are eligible for at the $50 level, but the $100 level opens you up to several bonuses, making it a much faster way to begin covering the cost of your ER orders.) In addition to making a commission and being eligible for payment, you also earn Essential Rewards points that can be redeemed for free products. These points are great for buying gifts, having stock on hand, or treating yourself to something special.

If you are interested in building a business with Young Living, please feel free to reach out to me and I can help get you started and connect you with our amazing support team.

You can sign up here, and learn more about Essential Rewards here.

    • Hi Katy, to remain a distributor (to get the discounted prices) you are only required to spend $50 per calendar year. There are no fees, just a yearly purchase requirement to keep the status. I hope that helps!

      • Are you sure it’s $50 per YEAR? I’ve been a ‘distributor’ for years, and was told 50 pv per MONTH. This is July 12, 2016.

        • In order to remain a member at the distributor level it’s just 50PV per year that must be purchased to remain active. Essential Rewards is a 50PV minimum per month.

  • Hi, What if I just want to make a small purchase and don’t want the kit. Will you still get credit for the purchase and benefit. I don’t mind trying it but I don’t want to buy a kit.

    • Hi LiLi, If you’d like to make purchases without buying a kit, you can easily do that by signing up as a customer (http://bit.ly/18IlYJW). This way doesn’t require a kit purchase, but it also won’t qualify you for the member discounts.

If you’d like the discount that comes with distributor status (24%), you have to purchase a kit (one time when you sign up). The kits that include oils and/or a diffuser, are a great value.

  • I’ve been thinking about joining under an old friend and I’m debating on which membership to join under. I’ve had friends get me into things in the past where it seemed great but then I was stuck having to buy every month and it was way too much. My understanding is that there are no obligations or fees at all to buy product as a member but for the independent distributer as a customer is ONLY $50/year and from what I read there’s no punishment for not doing that other than not getting the discounts until you reach $50 which after looking at prices seems easy to do. So basically I’m wondering, is it the smartest choice to sign up as an independent distributor as a customer so that I receive those benefits? I’m not looking to start a business and quite possibly be unable to sell this to anyone around my area so it would just be the perks of discounts I’m looking at. Thought? I’d love some help deciding!

    • You are correct. Signing up as an independent distributor will get you access to the discount. The only requirement is that you purchase a kit (one time – any kit that comes with a diffuser is a great savings) and spend at least $50 per year to maintain the discount.

There is an optional program (Essential Rewards) that will earn you points that can be used for free oils, that has a $50/mo minimum, but that’s entirely optional. I use it because it makes sense for me.

  • If you enroll in Essential Rewards can you opt out at any time with no penalty? I would like to try it but do not want to be stuck if it is not working out. Thank you for this post! Very helpful!

    • Hi Betsy, yes you can opt out at any time without any sort of penalty. The only thing to remember is that if you have points earned, you’ll want to use them before cancelling or they will go away when you cancel.

They also give you a once per year grace — so if you like the program but just can’t afford it one month or really don’t need anything you can call and put it on hold for one month without any penalty. I tend to stock up on oils I use a lot on months where I don’t need much – lavender, lemon, Thieves, etc. That’s what has worked best for me.

      I hope this helps 🙂

  • I am very much wanting to start a business with yl although I have not done this as of yet. I am wondering the benefits of being under someone or not. It would be nice to be with a group of people to learn from, how do you choose? There are so many. How do you even begin to sell the oils? Also I see when you sign up you need a tax I’d number, I don’t have one. Would you put your sis in there instead?

    Thanks

    • Hi Ivy,

One of the best benefits of signing up under someone is that you have a support system built in (though this can obviously vary person-to-pers0n). Your upline should be available to help answer questions and help you build your team. We offer a Facebook group for our team as well, which is a great way to connect and get support.

I think everyone has a different story when it comes to selling and sharing oils. A friend introduced me to YL and after using them for about a year I knew that I wanted to be more involved than just an end-user. I like to offer information, experience, and help where wanted and that’s how I share YL. In our team we have an herbalist, enthusiasts, and more. They each have their own story that lends to the way they connect and share YL. If you ever have questions, please feel free to reach out. I can answer better when tackling specific aspects.

I used my ssn when signing up, no tax ID. I hope that helps!

  • I’m interested in starting to use oils, but was looking for an active an good upline. Are you still active?

  • Hello,

I have a question, Can I sing in like a Independent distribuidor as Costumer to start a business and if it goes well, change to a Distribuidor as Bussines?

    Thanks

    • Hi Giss, Absolutely. You actually sign up as an Independent Distributor (member) the same either way. The difference is in how you choose to use the account. If you hope to make an income there are some things that you’ll want to do to be eligible to earn a commission. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

  • In the agreement it says that you need to order 50 PV monthly. Is this correct? I though it was for a full year?

    • 50PV yearly is all that is required to stay active as a distributor (to receive the 24% discount).

The 50PV monthly is part of an *optional* rewards program called Essential Rewards. With a 50PV minimum monthly order you can save up to 20% more earned back as points.

This program is optional, but I love it. I purchase oils but I also love the Thieves cleaning concentrate and some of their supplements, so it’s easy for me to spend 50PV a month and the 20% back is really nice. I have a post about ER here https://theecofriendlyfamily.com/essential-rewards/

  • Can I become a distrubutor (business) and not enroll in the Essential Rewards program? I would love to sign up and sell as it comes in and not be forced to make orders each month.
For the 50PV does that include my orders (with the 24% discount) or just customer full retail orders?

    • Essential Rewards is completely optional. The only requirement to maintaining a distributor account is having a 50PV order each year, personally (by you). If you decide to make an income there are some other things to consider to be eligible for all earnings, but that still doesn’t require Essential Rewards.

  • Hi I’ve just joined YL as a distributor and purchased my premium kit, however my up line isn’t giving me much support and I’ve not been added to a FB group. Can I change my up line
    Regards
    Chantelle

    • Hi Chantelle,

You can. Reach out to Young Living’s support and they can help you. I’m guessing it would be helpful to have an idea of who you might like to move to though. So be sure to have the member number for that person before contacting them. I would reach out soon though since they do have some limits on time to change.

      Good luck!

  • What if I placed an order via quick order and didn’t realize I needed to have ER to get commission? I am a new memeber (couple of weeks) can I some how rectify that mistake??

    • This has actually changed and I need to update this post. To earn kit bonuses (when a new signup enrolls with a premium kit) the requirement is any 50 PV order (even combined orders in the month!) To be eligible for all other commissions the requirement is 100 PV. Once you start earning regularly it’s advantageous to do ER since you’ll save more in the process – or at least I have found that to be true for me.

  • Hi, you have a lot of great info here. I signed up in Februrary. I also signed up for ER. It is starting to evolve. Just to clarify, As a distributor whom bought 3 starter kits actually in February and signed up for ER am I good to go to sign people up with my membership number as is? I put my ER order in yesterday and spent 381.00 so I could get all the great promos. Or do I have to bump up to the 100.00 monthly and provide my SS number. The woman I signed up under only signed up a week before me and is lovely but not very helpful with my many questions . TIA Tracy

  • Is there training you have? The person who signed me up doesn’t do it as a business and no very helpful in guiding or advice. Am I able to change who I can be under for additional support?

  • If you signed up as a distributor and enrolled in ER but do not plan on selling anything, just want the monthly orders for yourself is this considered a business? Do you have to file on your taxes if you are only buying for yourself.

  • Hello! I am looking to become a distributor for essential oils to start a business for awhile. I was wondering if this is an easy process to start and what benefits come from selling? I would love to be able to make money selling something that I am passionate about! I would like to email you personally to talk about it more, if possible. Hope to hear from you soon, Amanda!

  • Is it possible to make commission once in awhile or does it have to be a monthly thing? for example if I have a 100pv order for one month but the next month I don’t will I make commission off that one month? I’m not sure yet if I want it to become a full-time business for me. Thanks!

    • Yes it is. When I first started I paid attention to the months where I knew I’d earn some commission (maybe because someone signed up or because someone who had previously signed up placed an order) and then I was sure to bump up my order to hit the 100 PV amount.

If you enroll in Essential Rewards (optional program) and want to remain in in it (you earn a % of your order back in points that spend 1 for $1 basically) then you’d want to be sure to spend enough to stay enrolled in that program (50 PV/month)

  • i was attempting to sign up for a membership, the 24% off retail price. I do not want to sell, make any money just want the membership. It asked me for tax info and i put my social security number in and it says its already in use. ??????? please help me figure out who is using my ss#

    • Hi Anna, I would call Young Living’s member services immediately. If you’ve ever tried to sign up (started the online application) but then decided not to, it’s possible that it still has your place ‘held’ sort of, otherwise someone may have input their number wrong or (hopefully not) used yours intentionally. I would call them right away. I’m sure they can help. Their number is 800-371-3515.
